sitting at the airport…
Heading to Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and decided it’s the moment to kick this writing off.
I am in the midst of a transition. for the past six years, I’ve been collaboratively developing and teaching in a low residency graduate program focused on craft history and theory. That program ends on June 30 (closed by Warren Wilson College).
This has opened up a space for some amazing opportunities - this residency being one.
It is also a moment to write. I write a lot, but typically to deadline or commission. Starting this blog/newsletter/whatever it will be is my way of changing that for myself.
I’ve called this craftscape because that’s the space in which I live and work it’s a term I’ve been using for more than decade. More on that as I wrote. . .
I am in the midst of co-editing the final MA in Critical Craft Studies publication, archiving the program (digital files take soooo long to download!) and heading to Haystack as a visiting artist.
This is my project:
LIBRARY AS TOOLBOX: WHICH CRAFT LIVES ON THE HAYSTACK SHELVES?
Libraries construct knowledge and reflect systems of power. What does the collection of books in the Haystack Library convey about representation in craft? Employing Shelf Life, designed by the collective Related Tactics, as a visual intervention and critical springboard, we will examine “which craft” resides in this campus toolbox. Over tea, readings, and conversation, we’ll come together to understand the work of decolonizing through this craft library. The project will remain available all summer for ongoing interaction.
heading to the next of three flights and a ride to get to Deer Isle, Maine. More to come.
